The only legal headers in CA are shorties that don't relocate the factory cats.

I have JBA shorties on my car, which are smog legal.

Pacesetter Mid Length (shorties) are legal also.

Whoever told you that is wrong, they won't pass the visual inspection due to relocating the factory cats, and they don't have a CARB ID#.

Shorties fit in front of the factory cat locations and do not relocate them - and not even all shorties have a CARB ID# to make them smog legal in CA.

...not to say you can't pass the sniffer with midlength or longube headers, of course. They will just fail the visual.

^^^ Rob is correct

however, I personally think you should save your money and keep the stock headers on if you want to stay legal. Shorties barely give you any power gains and are crazy expensive. I can buy some longtubes for cheaper than the shorties...

Rob (Bad30th) is supercharged if I remember correctly so in his case it doesn't hurt... but if your stock save your money and use it elsewhere. Or just get some LT's...

Pacesetter calls it's shorties, "Mid Length". They are 50 state legal, that's a fact.
Maybe they weren't before but they are now.

pt#70-1348 is the painted shorties for a 98-99 LS1 F-body, and pt#72C1348 is the ceramic coated version.

The Edelbrock TES, and the Hooker shorties also have EO#'s

Those Pacesetters do have a CARB ID # so they should be OK in CA :

http://arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/de...eo/D-439-7.pdf

They can call them "midlengths" but they don't relocate the factory cats, which is the requirement :

These are true midlengths (these are MAC midlengths, which relocate the cats) :

If in doubt, ask a smog tech, or take a look at the CARB website :
