Default valve cover gasket question

Are the valve cover gaskets on the 2000 LS1 reusable? Thinking about painting the covers. Just curious. Thanks in advance.

No, although they are an O-ring style gasket, once you have used them, they will swell up, which is fine when they are in their grooves in the valve cover, but once you remove the cover and If one of the gaskets pop out,,, You will not be able to get it back in there, it will be too long and push the rest of it out as you try to push it in,,, I know I have tried it aint happenin gotta get new ones. Autozone sells the gaskets,, They are about twelve bucks, Hope this helps.

I've taken mine off when I did my cam/heads swap and painted the covers as well. Reused the gaskets w/o any issues.

Yeah i was thinking you should be able to visually inspect it and if its fine throw it back on there. If its too old of a car i would just replace it though and have one less thing to worry about later on

I like the less worry idea......right now the engine is out of the car and its so easy. Would not enjoy replacing them once its installed.

now that is sexy!!! i was gonna paint mine the same color after my heads and cam swap as well.

also the LS1 motor was built in mind with most of the gaskets being re-usable

valve cover gasket
timing cover gasket
intake manifold gaskets
throttle body gasket
some times even the exhaust manifold gasket...matters who you talk to

but i would always check the condition of your gaskets before re-using them. i changed my valve cover gaskets when i changed my pushrods cause i have a cut in one of them and the other one looks like they cranked the **** out of the valve cover bolts.
