Default weird coolant temperature?

car is 1998 Z28 A4 only mods r in sig. otherwise stock. i usually do not drive thru traffic and all so my car barley stops when i drive it daily, but today i went to a near by city which is about 15 miles away and did like 10 miles thru traffic! i noticed my engine temp was well on 212F and its only 92 outside! it wont go higher but i noticed fans didnt go on max speed?! when the traffic goes a bit fast it drops well before 194F or even lower 185F. also, my oil pressure stays at ~30psi on 212F but will would jump only if i let off the brakes. i did a search and read that 194F is the optimum? is my overheating?

What you describe sounds like normal operation for one of these cars.
The factory setting for fan turn on temps are:
#1 Fan on at 226*
#2 Fan on at 235*
Moving at highway speeds around 185* is normal as well.

I know what you mean, it's scary when you are stuck in traffic and you see the gauge going up close to the red. That took some time for me to get used to.
As for when you get to the hot time of your year, I really wouldn't worry about it. I used to live in Atlanta, GA. Summertime temps would go up to 100+ quite often along with humidity levels of 80%. It never got to the red area of the gauge even in long periods of stop & go traffic.
As long as you have a good radiator, and water pump, the two stock fans will keep it in the safe range.

haha exactly that man^ my water pump is new and radiator is perfect. am not worried about over heating i just hate to see something wrong with the car and pressure droping i think ill tune them to kick at a lower temp. would a HP tuner do that? and what temps do you guys recommend?

These engines were designed to run hot theres no need to worry. For 92f outside your car is doing a great job staying cool.

From their Help file HP Tuner shows that it will let you set the turn on temps for the fans.
http://www.hptuners.com/help/index.h..._favorites.htm
Settings are listed under Parameters-GM > System > Fans
It seems that you can only set the speed variable with the #1 Fan.

Like the folks above stated, its good where the factory sets them.
But if you feel the need (like I did myself) you can adjust them.
Mine are set as follows:
#1 on at 185* when speed is less than 45 mph and 200* when over 45 mph.
#2 on at 195* under 45 mph and 215* when over 45 mph.
I use LT1-Edit which lets me control speed setting variable for both fans.

Not sure if you have to deal with emissions testing there but if you do you should be aware that with the temps turned down the catalytic converter may not reach optimum temperature for maximum emissions control.
