799 heads?
i found some 799 heads for $300, whats the difference between 799's and 243's? (ls6) heads if i've read everything right. Will there be any noticeable gain from these heads? or would my money be better spent on a set of aftermarket heads and cam?

1. good price, but have them checked by a machine shop before install
2. ls6 valves came with some 243's, also 799's were cast in a dif location. other than that nothing really.
3. yes, i gained 23 rwhp just by adding stock 799's.
4. my advice is have a custom cam spec'd for your needs, and have a local shop pp and mill the heads. i recommend EPS cams. this is what i'm going to replace my 224r with. if you do this you would be hard pressed to make less than 430 rwhp. not to mention you can retain daily driveability by consulting a pro on your cam choice.

Yes there will be gains, but for the amount of money it costs for head bolts, gaskets, etc I would either have them cleaned up or fully ported. Also milled for more compression.
Decent price if they are complete and in great shape, pass on them if they are not complete or have issues.
I got a set for $250 shipped with a mildy dinged chamber (they had already been run on another engine than the one that caused the damage without any issues). I'm going to do a mild port job myself and have them milled before they go on.

do a valve seat leak test with some liquid.if they leak a little get a valve job.you could gain 15 hp with those heads alone ,the right cam could add another 30-40 rwhp.consider a TSP cam pkg if you are on a budget.

That's a great deal if you ask me. Go buy those today (as long as nothing is wrong with them)! If you want a better set of heads, you could flip those for at least $200, but they are a great head for the money and you won't be disappointed. The rest was answered in the first response.

My wife's car dropped a valve, so im rebuilding her car with a set of milled (11:1) stock port 799s and a custom PatG/EPS cam back in it. They are worth a decent gain i hope. Ill know in the next few weeks how she does.
I paid 425 for a set of stock, hardly used 799s from See5 on here, and ive already got em milled. My cam will be here in a couple days.

yeah i had planned to get them checked out and cleaned up some. I gather there should be no fitment issues?? what about valve cover fitment? Thanks for all the help and info this far.

no fitment issues at all. you will have a slight bump in compression. from 10.1 to 10.5 if you didn't already know that. even more if you go to a thinner head gasket, however that may warrant the need for shorter push rods. in my mind if you are going to do that you might as well have them pp'd and milled.
btw what cam are you thinking about?

I have no idea on a cam yet, I just figured I'd try to get these heads cuz it seemed like a good deal... If the valves on 799's are the same as any ls1 head where does the performance advantage come from?? I was under the impression that 799's and 243's were the same head just different casting #'s???

i would suggest something along the lines of 226/230 eps grind, or possibly a 228/232 XER grind. both of these are very streetable, both are just under or right at .600 lift. that way you can stay with single valve springs and keep the valvetrain weight down(and the cost as well). you might also look into the comp trunion upgrade for your rockers. as well as new lifters. maybe ls7's or comps. obviously you need push rods, if going with ls7 lifters you will have to check for length, especially depending on what cam you chose due to base circle. and lastly an ls2 timing set to replace the stocker.
