Default exhaust in/out dimensions?

i have been reading a lot of posts using the search button

and i keep seeing threads with different info. im getting confused.

i have a 2002 ss camaro 35th anny. it has what i believe to be stock ss exhaust. it has only 2 tips and they are seperated (not the boxy ones under the license plate).

i found a thread with the stock muffler serial number listed but i cant find it again. mine looks like this

several numbers

4

then several numbers.

now my question is, on my muffler, what are my inlet and outlet sizes? i tried to eyeball it on a tape measure and inlet looked like 2.5 and outlet 2.75 inches, but i was at a weird angle so those may be off a lot.

also i have read that my I pipe is 2 3/4 inches then i read 3 inches. is it correct that only the dual/dual has a 3 inch i pipe?

i'm wanting to do a muffler only for now (not catback) and then after i save up for headers and y pipe i will do a cutout.

thanks for any help in advance. please know that i did search and search but people posting contradictory info just confused me more.

Y-pipe and muffler inlet are 2 3/4.

so like on the magnaflow muffler there is no 2.75 inlet. do i get a 3 inch or 2.5 inch inlet? also will the muffler shop be able to weld them in with no extra fittings?

Sorry should have specified, i meant i-pipe, not y-pipe. :o

Anyways, i would suggest you look at doing something else instead of just a muffler. Perhaps a cut-out, which would be a fraction of the price, and get you more gains.

i agree that short term a cutout would be great bang for my buck, but i am mostly looking for good sound until i can save up for headers/y/cutout. i dont know if my thinking is dumb here or not. let me know if im being a thick-skulled noob.

another quick question: as far as a cutout and muffler inlet, do i go with 3 inch or 2.5 inch on a stock i pipe? and does the shop have to "make them work" or what?

Go with 3". Ideally you want the existing exhaust pipe to slip into the new piece. This avoids turbulance, and helps with exhaust flow.
