Default Power Steering Cooler - Why?

What is the reason that we have power steering coolers on our cars. I can't imagine the p/s fluid getting that warm or is it because the temp needs to be brought up for optimal operating conditions?

Never had the PS cooler on any other car. I imagine it's
so they could use cheaper plastic materials.

The stock PS pump is overboosted and generates a lot of heat, the cooler is intended to keep the fluid temps at an acceptable level. If you do any AutoX or HPDE you can quickly overwhelm the stock pump/cooler set-up and be puking ps fluid all over your engine bay. The best solution is to replace the stock pump with a revalved unit (eg. Turn One etc.), this reduces the pressure/flow levels and lowers temps. A separate air/air cooler will also avoid putting additional heat into your engine cooling system.

they're really common on police pursuit vehicles as well for prolonged use. Since the camaros has been used over the years, i could see some of the features spilling over into the civilian cars too

i installed one of the coolers LS6427 recommend and followed his write-up and my power steering is so much better. no whine really, i need a new pump soon because i didn't install the cooler with the new one. Definitely worth the $27 bucks and hour it cost me. i had the stock ws6 one and it got hot as ***** so this one is a simple install and worth investment in the long run.

hahaha x2

an aftermarket unit would work much better as stock doesnt do much at all in the aid of keeping the fluid from boiling over and the whine when you turn the wheel.

Cant wait to hook up my aftermarket piece here this weekend as part of my suspension overhaul.

Ever notice in an F-body you can turn a 275 front tire with one finger? Thats what they mean by over-boosted at low speeds. Over-boosted gives the easy effort steering, and makes the pump work its *** off.

X3 or like mine that was plastic & i did a fun track day road racing and cooked the fluid, which melted the inside of the P/S Fluid holder. Run a cooler now & a metal P/S steer fluid holder, helps heaps with the road racing.

I ended up putting a turn one pump on. I dont auto x. When I would make a pass at the dragstrip, shifting at 7k it would boil the fluid. Tried 3 stock replacement pumps first.
