What year is your ride?

YEP, many have had problems with MSD coils. Going to LS2 coils is a little step up. Going to the LS2 truck coils with exposed heat sinks is the big step up. F/I guys use them.

Whichever coils you move to, you'll need the LS2 style matching brackets and the coil harnesses.

The truck coils work best with a tune for them.

Agree on the truck coils with heat sinks. Highest output of most gm factory coils.

MSD makes some good stuff but, this area they should have not gotten into. A 10 year old article said it was going to be very hard to improve on the factory coil. Use them.

What they said...

LS2 & LS2 truck coils w/ heat sinks are proven winners. There is a thread in here where a member used a Megasquirt to control spark through a spark plug & even increased the plug gap through a high RPM range. The LS2 & LS2 truck coils delivered a powerful spark regardless of gap/RPM. The Truck coils delivered a stronger spark than the LS2. However, the LS2 coils performed very well. There is really no question about it, LS2 & LS2 truck coils, FTW. Should add that a tune is not required. It is possible, through tuning, to change the dwell time to an LS2 table, but, is not required. If you have tuning software, go ahead & do it. Not an issue if you don't.

Don't waist your time/money on MSD coils that are both expensive & known to have had issues.

I haven't seen any testing where the two are compared. Perhaps if the LS9 coils have heat sinks, they could be equal to LS2 truck coils. Would a$$ume that GM followed through into the Gen IV coils what was learned from the LS2 truck coils.

Check U-tube. Technical guys tend to download video test results there.

What is your vehicle??

Yes, you can buy the coils at parts stores like Pep Boys and Auto Zone but they will not have the needed wiring harnesses (assuming you have an LS1) and the mounting brackets.
