Default cam degree quesiton (quick)

i read the other threads and have done my research but... when degree a cam with the heads off do i have to use a solid lifter? and if so what solid lifter do i need to buy?

Not with the heads off, nor if you use a lightweight check spring with the heads on. Only if you are trying to check with regular valve springs in place.

so do i just put my new ls7 lifter in the tray and degree it from there? do i not use the tray, i head the trays keep the lifters suspended off the cam and therefore don't work when degreeing the cam,,, thanks for the help

Remove the tray so the lifter will stay on the camshaft.
