Somebody explain fast intakes to me?

Every now and then I see " upper shells" for sale. How do they work? Can you swap from one upper shell to another? Let's say I have a fast 78 and need more induction down the line... Can I swap the upper shell to a 90 or 102?

if you have a fast 78 you can swap the upper shell for the 90 or 92 I believe but the 102 is completely different
