Default Alternator intermittent no charge

Is my alternator going out? Very unusual problem. Sometimes when I start my 99 Z28 the alternator is not charging. It only seems to do it on colder mornings, say below 50 degrees F (Florida car). On warmer days, I start it up and it's fine all day, no matter how many times I drive it during the day. The voltage never drops while I am driving.

Just started the car this morning and it was about 65 degrees. The alternator was not charging. I took the alternator off and took it to Autozone to have it tested. It tested good. I guess I'll check for a broken exciter wire.

Found it! Broken exciter wire. The wires were broken right at the connector. There was just enough sticking out of the back of the connector that I was able to splice and solder it back together. I guess the wires would grow just enough from thermal expansion to make a connection when it warmed up. Now I wonder how long it'll take before vibration cracks the solder and I have to do it all over again!

Not uncommon for them to fail, I replaced mine and clipped the 3 unused wires.

If you have some time, read through this, sounds like your problem is fixed but you might find this interesting as well.

I just fixed mine today. I had some extra HID wiring, slid one end into the connector and used a connector off the HID kit to join the two wires. So far so good
