Default Ls6 PCV swap on 1998 z28

I'd like to do a swap to the ls6 pcv system which I've seen the how to but that's on a 1999+ with the center bolt valve covers but I still have the stock perimeter bolt valve covers. So really my question is can you do the swap with perimeter bolt valve covers? I will get better heads later on when budget allows but if I wanted to do it now could I?
