Default 3inch band clamp help

I have a couple of 3 inch band clamp I just got. I need to use them for attaching my y to my headers. They have some black tar looking stuff with them. I am assuming I am supposed to smear the tar across there the two sides bolt together? I just want to make sure befor I do it. Thanks

It sounds like it is exhaust paste. If it is not it will just burn off.

Definitely weird.... my Accu-Seal / Torca / Torctite clamps never had anything like that.... Almost sounds rather like a repair clamp than a regular band clamp.

Thanks for the replys. It was a patch of the sealer right where the two ends meet in between the bolts. So I put it even on the joint and it worked perfectly.
