FTP lids Cracking?
Hey everyone,
I'm on my second FTP 98mm lid and they seem to start cracking and falling apart after about 2 yrs. Is this normal? I hardly drive my car sits in the garage most of the time. Last time FTP gave me like $30 off a new lid. I went to take my car out last night to a meet and noticed this one is starting to crack across the back tabs and on the front lip where it goes onto the air box. The car has stock bellows and poly motor mounts so i know its not getting tweaked from the motor.
Are there any other options for lids? I like the design, just would expect it to last a little longer. I'm thinking about reinforcing it with some epoxy and keep running it.

I wasn't impressed with the lid from the start. Very thin and flimsy.
My SLP lid felt 100x like more of a quality piece and had it on for a LONG time (7 years?) Wish SLP would make a 98mm version of their lid.
And yes, mine cracked at the throat when installing it. I just Gorilla Glued it. Still fine. I avoid removing that damn thing like the plague. PITFA to get it back on with no MAF and a single silicone hose.

Mine is cracked around the sealing perimeter.
Cracks on the body by inlet. One of the tabs broke off. I repaired what i could with epoxy but has developed hairinle cracks in other parts.
The main crack is where the lid seals with airbox clips. Lid is about 2.5yr. Old
I will not be buying another. Cheap brittle plastic.
Its not like i took a sledge hammer to it. Im nervous everytime i remove it for service
By comparison my 10+yr old mti still in same condition even being on multiple cars over the yrs. No cracks, seals correct. Plastic is rugged

Yeah, if FTP would just make them out of the same material as the SLP lids they would have a winner!
That's the reason I still use a SLP lid, they built them with the correct type of plastic Still a lot of companies make them out of cheap plastic that'll never survives the long term conditions present under the hood of a car!

Here's the reply I received from FTP today about considering using a different material that doesn't crack, like the brittle plastic they use now.
The material we use is not brittle but there are two parts that are glued together and sometimes the glue comes apart and needs to be reglued. Other than that, the material has proven to be very reliable.

^ Oh horse ****.. Mine split in half when I tried to plug in a ZO6 MAF, come to think of it. Tried to sand down the lip on the MAF to get it to fit, but no bueno. My stock LS1 MAF fit great in the mouth of the SLP lid.
Let us all take pictures of our broken lids and send them into FTP. Too bad I sold my SLP lid, or I'd take a side by side comparison of how different the thicknesses are. Miss that SLP lid.. Wasn't gonna work with the FAST 102 though. :-/
How many times have they taken it on an off a car with BOTH MAF and SD setups? SD setup is no picnic.

My FTP lid cracked where the MAF went too but I still ran it just fine, it's my favorite looking lid out there, the only reason I got rid of it is because someone straight traded me their Blackwing lid for it

The design is good, just the material sucks. I have sent FTP pictures last time my lid cracked and it wasn't at any of the glued seams. I got a $30 discount.
Anyone tried the stainless 100mm lid on eBay or is it crap?
Or fab one out of some 12 gauge AL ?

I went through 2 98mm FTP lids before my current setup. The first one was one of their old clear lids and it was straight up crap. I don't think it lasted 2 months before the tabs had warped and it split where it was glued together. Probably why they stopped making them. My second one was one of the black lids and it held up way better than the first. It just barely split on the circular seam, and a little epoxy fixed it right up.
