If you have Mac mids you can gain quite a bit by simply cutting off the collector and welding in a 3" pipe as a collector. Trust me, it helped pick up over a tenth in the 1/8th mile.

If the Macs were fixed, meaning the welds inside the tubes were ground down and had 3" collectors instead of the ball flanges, then the gains won't be huge. That being said, a LT header will perform better. Just not going to see huge gains if they were worked, if not, gains will be much larger.

I have done back to back dyno tests on well made short tube headers and long tube headers. On the motor I tested the long tubes were better below peak torque and did indeed make more torque. Above peak torque there was on average only a 1hp difference between the two.

The reason I say well made is that most short tube headers do not have the best of collectors. By the way Joe Sherman predicted the outcome of my test. He was right.

Hello 1989GTA,
Can you please tell me what brand of shorty headers you used while performing that back to back test?
Thanks

Exactly. So, off the shelf Mac headers had some short comings. Fix them and not a lot to be gained. FWIW my old car ran the #'s in my sig with macs. Welds ground and ball flanges opened up but not replaced.

This was on a SBC(1989GTA) and were a modified set of Dyno Don short tube headers. They were modified because once they were installed in the car I was utilizing exhaust termination boxes. I had to make sure I had the room for the exhaust termination boxes. I also used a "spike" at the collector. The car has ran a 11.57@116 in the quarter mile with a race weight of around 3650 pounds. A fully optioned car and passes California smog. Here is a couple of pictures to show what I am talking about.
