Default Are all ls motors the same on the outside?

What I mean is are all the gen III and IV motors (ls1 ls2 lm7 lq4 lq9 etc.) the same on the outside. Like motor mount holes and the outside dimensions? Are all the front accessories interchangeable? As well as the heads? Sorry if its a dumb question I just don't know really anything about the ls family. Any help would be great.

I've read with the LQ motors, you have to drill for one of the brackets.

Pretty Much yes....
a few blocks are missing a few bolt holes, or have extra ones..
but if it doesnt have a bolt hole you need, you can add it in yourself with a drill and a tap.

I am still learning about ls engines but from my experience I believe they are extremely similar. The real question is why are you asking? If you get more specific about why and what you should get very specific answers.

Im going to do a ls Dakota swap and i was trying to decide on what motor to use. I know i can use the Dakotas stock motor mounts with some adapter plates but was unsure if the plates would work with all the ls motors. I was thinking about using the 5.3 and doing a turbo setup but im still not sure.

There are a ton of guys using a 5.3 turbo for big cheap power. I can't answer your motor mount dilemma but I am pretty sure you should be able to modify or fab up something. I have never seen an ls engine in a dakota so this one would be a first for me. Good luck and have fun getting traction. lol

Motor mounts are all the same. The iron blocks are missing provisions for f-body front accessories. LSX blocks have two extra head bolts per cylinder. That's it in a nutshell.

no you dont have to run trcuk accessories. the truck alternator uses 2 bolts on the bracket to the block where the aluminum blocks have a 3rd hole. you can either just leave that hole out or drill it if you use the fbody accessories. and yes a t56 will bolt the a 5.3. all ls/lq engines share the same bolt patterns. minus some wiring and a couple drill and taps any ls/lq engine will interchange
