Can you use a single Cat?
Just finished up my motor build and now need to decide on exhaust. Previously had shorties with into a ORY and a flowmaster muffler. I don't really want the flowmaster muffler but may just keep it and put in two cutouts. I guess my question is I want to put a cat on the car because exhaust shop wont work on car without it. Can I just put one cat on after the merge? Will there be fitment issues with this? I just dont want to drop 300 on two cats.

"Legally" speaking Dirty Dog is correct but depends on what you want to do. For just a visual inspection I would do those All Flow cats or a pair of aftermarket cats which you could gut and weld / band clamp in. If its for emissions testing you really probablly need the cat on each side before the Y pipe merger. I toyed with the idea of using a single cat after the merger too but I dont think its close enough to get the cat hot enough for it to do its job which may cause you to fail emissions testing.

i actually would prefer to have cats but i bought her without so whatever my loss. But i did ask the muffler shop if i could get a single cat welded in after the ORY and he said yes it could pass for visual but due to the long tube headers mainly (cast iron would hold heat better than thinwall pipe) the exhaust cools off way to much to ignite the cat (believe it requires 400deg operating temp)
or just get the cheater cat for 40 as above.
EDIT: and as for cutout question electric is easily the way to go, I remember seeing units and controller for $120 and they go at the end of the header. the idea is to evacuate the exhaust as fast as possible without restriction)
