Default cant take off the pulley bolt.. keeps spinning in all gears.. a4.. pls help!

i crank on the.. crank pulley bolt, and it just spins.
i tried park, first, drive, neutral, e brake with all, reverse.. nothing.
i got this idea of trying to start the engine with the wrench in there,
but a friend said toyota techs did it and one broke his hand on a <100hp engine so dont do it.
another idea was to jam something into the flexplate (everyone calls it "flywheel"?) to stop everything from moving. but then a friend said it might mess up the balancing or i might break something.

all i want to do is to swap these pullies,
but the TC is mush and spins easily.

Starting it is a bad idea... I believe you need a flywheel locker for an A4. Not sure where you can get one, probably at an automotive store.

i did what another member used 2in wide piece of 1/8th in thick steel about 12inches long and put a notch in the middle of it on one side...opened up the little port hole in the center of the tranny underneith...moved the vert so i could slide it in and lay the notch on teh casing and went at it...worked like a charm and only about 3 bucks hehe

Dont know if you have an air compressor and an impact, but if you do, you could save your self the hassle and the time and get it done within a few minutes. Cant remember off the top of my head what size the head is, but if you use an impact, youll have it off within seconds. If its the stock pulley, then a 3 jaw puller will take it off, but if its an ASP, then a regular puller will work, you just need to screw the 3 bolts into the pulley. I believe theyre metric threads.

It's called a chain wrench. Plumber use them on cast iron pipe. Sears sells them or any good plumbing supply store.
