Default about to do LS1 -> LS6 PCV

well, i had the heads off to fix some other issues, and figured now is the best time to do the LS1 -> LS6 PCV conversion.

the only part i was not looking forward to was cutting a chip out of the block in order for the new valley cover to fit.

however, i got in there and took a look, and i was pleasantly surprised to find that there is no piece on my block that i have to cut out of the way....i guess that's confirmation that i have an LS6 block!!!

that is awesome that you got an LS6 block, but i have to ask what kind of oil are you using and how often do you change the oil. you should not have that kind of burnt on oil buildup in the valley

been running Mobil1 fully synthetic since i bought the car (with 11,700 on the clock), either 5w30 or 10w30, depending on whether it's winter or summer.

i usually change it every 5k - 7k, but a couple times it's been longer, maybe 10k

i'm gonna run some seafoam in the oil for 100 - 200 miles once i get it all buttoned up, then do another oil change, hopefully that will clean things up a bit.

I didn't know you have to do that. Interesting.

That makes things easier for sure. Not that cutting it is difficult, but when choosing between needing to cut an engine block or not... well, I'm obviously going to choose the latter.

Like mentioned above, I can't believe how much buildup you've got from the oil, though!

i'm just wondering if the buildup of that stuff may be from having seafoam in the oil before? i seafoamed the oil probably 30k - 40k ago, so i guess it coulda liquefied any sludge and caused it to redistribute itself? i dunno.

When I did this to my c5 I was expecting to have to cut the block because my c5's a 1999 and when I went to install the valley cover I didn't have the provision! Weird stuff, but you'll love how much this cleans up the engine bay.

I don't think the lack of the protrusion is an indicater of an ls6 block, rather that you have an '01 or newer block. Also OP you need to shorten your oil change intervals, 3K is normal and you're extending way beyond that. Probably the reason for the residue buildup. I'm about to do the same swap using fabricated valve covers with no pvc provisions at all, I just need to get air into the crankcase. Good Luck with your swap!! Larry.

This has been proven to not be true -- for instance, my 2002.

He's running full synthetic Mobil which (if it's Gold Top) is rated for 15,000 miles. Most guys don't run it that long and change it every 5-7k. I've run mine like this with no issues. Still very clean. Obviously don't run it at the track every week and expect it to get that kind of mileage out of it, but if it's on the road with occasional spirited driving, 7k is fine.

I agree with both statements. For the longest time I thought I had an LS6 block (1168) b/c of the "tell tale" indicators we all read about, as well as having a smooth valley area w/o the lines cast inside. When I did my heads last year, lo and behold, NOT an 1168 block, but just a newer version LS1. Only way to tell is see what the casting number is on the aft of the motor, driver side, just below the head deck.

Yes, 10% of the 2001 LS1 FBody's were 1168's, and 25% in 2002, but that doesn't automatically mean you got one just b/c you didn't have to cut the block. There were about 4 or 5 different LS1 castings if memory serves me correctly.

Also, when I did my valley, I had over 140k on my motor and it loked nice and clean inside. That pic is nasty nasty. 3k miles for oil, I don't give a **** what anyone says. That, and Mobile 1 certainly isn't what it used to be....
