Default So my car keeps throwing belts....

Because of my bulk under drive pulley. The pulley on the alternator got a little chewed during install and I'm pretty sure it's what is shredding my belts. Can I go back to a stock alternator pulley? My car idles around 800, and I have no ac of anything. Auto car though. I do have a small sub and amp, but I think I'm going to remove them. Anyone running JUST the crank pulley? Belts are getting too expensive.... Lol

well...you cant just run no belts, you need the alternator to keep the car running, otherwise youll just drain the battery. so if i understand this correctly you have an underdrive pulley on the alternator? and its chewing up belts? well if you removed and installed the alternator pulley you sure as hell can put the original one back on.

Though I'm a manual, I have only the crank pulley. I noticed absolutely no difference in charging, lights, etc.

Try and figure out which of the pulleys is out-of-plane.
This is the only reason for shredding belts. Every
belt-to-pulley face "should" be static, no movement,
where there is contact -no scrub, no shred. That's
what you get when everything is in-plane. But if you
force the belt to walk or settle in as it makes contact,
there's your shredding.

My alernator pulley would not seat correctly and/or was machined to deep. It put angle in the belt system, and it would walk off in about 10 miles. Went back to the stock alternator pulley. Has been just fine.

What brand of UDP? I have heard that a few brands out there are notorious for throwing belts. Are your belts breaking or just slipping off?

I've never been a fan of overdrive alt pulleys, the smaller pulley should be avoided if you like to race your car, since you'll likely be spinning the alternator faster than it's designed for (over-reving). FYI, it's better to just bump the idle speed up a little if the UD crank pulley is turning the alt. pulley to slow.

If you don't have easy access to an impact wrench, here is a good way to do it without damaging the pulley. With this method you may still need to jam the cooling fins to keep the internals from spinning.

You can also use socket with some wrench flats, or grind some on a regular socket, that way you can still use a allen wrench to hold the shaft still while tightening the nut.

Don't need to hunt. WS6store has so graciously included belt numbers in their pulley kit descriptions. Use that info to hunt down the exact belt number you need.
