head gaskets or worse
Hello,
I was replacing my water pump today and on the top ports the coolant was more brownish. The bottom ports on each side the coolant is a nice green colour.
Does this mean I need head gaskets or is it worse? Oil on dipstick looks fine.
When I replaced the coolant a couple of months ago I don`t remember seeing anything weird in it.
The coolant is also a brownish colour but I don`t really see oil in nor does it seem to be separating in the jug.
I was replacing the water pump because it was leaking from the weep hole
The engine is a 5.3 with at least 150 k miles on it. I replaced the red/orange coolant with the green one when I swapped the engine in my 1987 Brougham.
Here are two pictures of the ports and the oil on the dipstick.

just found out a couple of threads about dex sludge. That might be the problem since I switched from red to green but did not really do a proper flush.
I'll get the hex keys tomorrow for the plugs on the block. But I am not sure I would be able to remove the one besides the starter because I already tried and rounded it off.
I am hoping to be able to remove all the sludge so it won`t come back.
By the way mods, feel free to move this thread to the GEN III Internal forum.
Thanks

I was able to remove one of the drain plugs. Took a big breaker bar and a good breakfast. Now I have a nice big allen 1/2 in. socket set
Coolant was a nice green colour so it did mix on that side at least. Good chance it mixed properly on the starter side.
