Default How to determine what size primaries you need for longtubes headers?

Well, Im getting ready to buy my 2nd set of longtubes and Im wondering how do I choose the right size. My choices are 1 3/4, 1 3/4 to 1 7/8, and 1 1 7/8. Most of my mods are in my sig., but Im planning to do a bigger cam real soon and heads will also be in the future. What size do I need? Thanks.

In your situation, 1 3/4 will be fine. 450+rwhp you should start looking into the stepped, and I'd say over 500rwhp start looking into the 1 7/8.

But then again, if you plan on modding your car more, you might as well get the 1 7/8 headers.

Personally, I want to go with the stepped headers, but I just cant justify the price. What kind of disadvantages/negative affects will I have using the 1 7/8 with a big cam stock heads? I will be doing heads later on and I might even consider nitrous, but that will be a long time from now.

They would offer great performance, with no draw backs that I know of. My friend is running 1 7/8ths on his heads, and cam, and everything else 414 LS1 and they work great.

Yea, they work great on a 414, but he is talking about a stock headed 346. No way would you want to put a 1 7/8 header on that. That accompanied by a big cam would equal jack low-mid range power. If you talk to the right header company, they won't even sell you a header that big if you tell them your set-up. If you plan on heads and a power adder later, you MIGHT check out the stepped headers, but for what you have now, the 1 3/4 will be fine. It's your decission on how much you plan to do in the future, and how long it will take you to do it. If you just gonna add heads, I'd still reccomend the 1 3/4", but if a power adder will be going along with it, then get the stepped.

It was my impression that 1 3/4 is good for stock cubes/near stock hp, and 1 7/8 is for 383 and up cubes or serious ponies....am I waaayyyy off track here or no?

Also....who sells the stepped headers?

Yes, 1 3/4 is fine for a stock displacement motor.

With a 382, I'd go with the stepped headers. Kooks sells them. That's where I got mine.
