New starter and flex plate sounds terrible
I am doing a swap and and have a 5.3 4l60e combo.
I placed a new starter and flex plate on my engine while it's on the run stand.
I tried to test the basic operation by turning it over and it sounded terrible. It sounds very dry. Moreover the starter did not disengage the fly wheel once power was removed.
the flex plate and starter are supposed to be correct the correct parts based on my research and the parts store.
any ideas on what is causing this?

Thanks for the idea. I do not have a ford solenoid in the mix so I don think that is the issue. I am jumping the factory starter solenoid from the battery on the engine run stand. I am not really cranking the motor just turning it over. I expect the starter to disengage when the power is removed from the solenoid. But, it does not.
Still looking for help.
Thanks.

There are two wires to the starter, the heavy wire from the battery and the thin wire from the wiring harness, only hot when cranking. If this wire stays hot, the starter will always be engaged.
It sounds to me that you need to shim the starter from the block. You should also be using starter bolts with the knurled sections.

Thanks for the info guys. I have a few updates. I did wire it as described above. Making sure to leave the constant power on the battery terminal at all times.
Unfortunately, that did not do the trick to get the starter to disengage when not engaged.
We happened to have a 2005 and up starter (I don't have the part number in front of me.) So I took a chance and installed it. It sounded a million times better. Not nearly as dry etc. Unfortunately it did not disengage the flex plate when power was removed from the solenoid terminal. I am going to add a few shims and see if that helps it.
Any ideas a re still welcome.
