Default Ported Mass Air Ends: Yes or No

Trying to decide if I should port my stock ends and whether I could use a saxon air straightener screen in it. What kind of gains could I expect? I have a FTRA lid and am getting a ported throttle body. I'd like to use an 85mm MAF, but someone said I would have to have to get a tune for it to work right. What do you guys think.

You will have to get a tune for anything you do with it. Leave it alone.

Unless you have a mid size cam and good ported heads it won't matter anyway. I went from stock MAF with stock screen to 85mm with Saxon screen and gained nothing.

Agreed. Leave the MAF alone. If ANYTHING throw the Saxon screen on the stock MAF.

If I were you, I'd get a chrs1313 ram air setup. Spend the money on that.

I just ordered the saxon screen to replace mine that I tore out when I first got the car.
I don't have the coin yet to buy a FAST intake or bigger throttle body...but I'd like to do whatever I can to get more air in to feed the cam I just bought. I bought an Ed Curtis StreetSweeper 235/239...so I'm getting it tuned anyways. Just looking for cheap budget mods I can do until I do heads/intake/TB. With my cam and exhaust...I'd like to do anything I can to get more air in. As long as it's cheap!

So does anybody think it would hurt if I ported the stock MAF ends and used the screen?

Like I said I would leave it alone based on my experience. I gained nothing from a larger MAF on a car with a good size cam and mildly ported heads. It takes a bit before the stock one becomes the problem. And this is also with a Fast 90mm intake.

Mine were done when I bought my car. No issues and I ran it for years. Probably didn't gain much though.

I just checked car-part.com, you can get a used MAF for $15-25. Buy one port it and if it causes problems you'll only be out ~$20. I remember watching a YouTube video of 2 cars with the same mods, they put ported MAF ends on one of them and did a couple roll races (I know ) the car with the ported MAF pulled over a car length on the other. Then they swaped the MAF's from one car to the other and raced again, the other car now with the ported MAF pulled a car length on the car that won the time before. I don't know how scientific any of that was but it seemed pretty convincing to me.

Also this picture makes a good argument for a ported TB.

Know a guy on a different forum that swears up and down this will make power.

It wont.
