Cracked oil pan......weld?? or replace???
it's a small hair line crack that happened when I was torquing it down, I think the rear cover gasket it what did it but I'm still not to sure. Can I get it welded or should I just replace it, I've called some auto salvage yards and no one had one and I don't want to have to buy a new one for such a small crack. Does anyone have one to buy I got papal

i would just replace it seeing how its off, if you weld it you will more than likely warp it and risk it not sealing and if you don't get all the crack out it will just come back. I am a welder btw not just some clown with 2 posts lol running my mouth

If it were mine, would fill the crack w/ jb weld & then make a square washer that overlaps the crack (into the corner that's still part of the pan) so that it can then be properly secured to the block. Square washer that overlaps the crack into the corner will transfer the clamping force of the bolt, to the oil pan

On the weld idea I was thinking about it warping and not sealing, the washer idea ain't bad....you think job weld would hold?? It's gonna have vibration, thats why I considered replacing it but they aren't cheap, it's a somewhat built motor and poly mounts.

I had a Integra GSR in high school and it was lowered a lot... one day I bottomed out and cracked my oil pan. .maybe 8 inch.
My metals teacher who is also a major car buff .he drilled a hole on each end of the crack to stop it.and he welded it up for me, it lasted the whole time I had my car after that and I can remember bottoming it out after that too!
But he's a 70 yr old welder
I can specifically remember me doubting it would hold up bottoming out again. .but he was confident it would be stronger than the rest of the pan

Well I guess they did't count my welcome wagon post . The thing is off the car fix it right and get a replacement. Then button her back up and forget about it .

Whether it holds or breaks is irrelevant in reference to it doing the job of sealing the corner. If it breaks, it will just act as a shim. The key is that there will be a clamping force on the corner that remains part of the pan.

Aluminium that is cracked & needs welding needs to be extremely clean, a sump that is soaked in oil with a crack that needs repair will need to be fitted to a 'block or something so it doesn't warp, but will most likely get oil soakage into the weld from the metal not being clean internally making the weld leak.
Buy a new sump, will be cheaper in the long run.

I know this is an old thread but if any of you guys still have your cracked fbody oil pans I would like one for mock up purposes. Let me know if you still have'em. Thanks!
