Default Short Water Pump Pulley

Clearance is very tight. I need about another 2" for radiator clearance; that Liberty Bell pulley is ridiculous. Otherwise I have to completely redesign the cooling system mounts. I can do that, But I'd rather just replace the water pump if I can.

I'm using F body front drive accessories, with power steering but no AC. I could change to Corvette stuff, but that's a lot of expense. The word "Corvette" in the title adds 20%.

I'v done a bunch of reading, and this is what I think I know:

- the LS2/3 pump is certainly closer, but makes belt alignment a little iffy.
- People have pulled the LS2 pump out on the shaft about 3/8", and then welded the pulley to the shaft
- What about a 3/8" spacer for the water pump? IMO, a better long term solution.

- The Edelbrock pump is only about an inch shorter.

- The Evans Cooling pump seems to be about 2" (maybe 2.5") shorter, and works better at high rpm's. Except for the cost, I'm liking this.
-- anybody use one?
-- is it really that much shorter?

Any other options available?

Corvette LS2/3 pump with 3/4" ebay spacers?
Flat face, no bell extension, spaced correctly for f body, off the shelf, unmodified parts.

Default Water pump pulley interferance

Has anyone used this set up, I have no room to spare for my radiator and fans. I have removed the acc. from my LQ9 and installed f-body p/s pump and alternator but the factory water pump shaft and pulley protrude out too far. Any one run or know of a shorter pump for the f-body set up? Thanks

That's what I ended up doing. You don;t gain a lot of clearance, but you do gain some.

.boB,
thanks for the measurements.
BTW, the extra ridge on the forward port of the water pump makes it work well if you cut it shorter.

The water pump is ACDelco 251-728; used in a lot of vehicles.

It is installed with the 3/4" spacers, you can sort of see them in the second picture. I also plumbed the head steam vents into the left side spacer. It was already drilled and tapped for that.

I did cut the outlet down for more space. Notice that the oultet is in a different place than the LS1 pump.

I would have preferred to use the closer fitting LS1 Corvette drive system. But it sticks out to far, and would hit the driver's side frame rail. To go that route, I'd have to eliminate the P/S pump; and for a number of reasons I didn't want to do that.

Fitting all the cooling components on this car has been a pain in the neck. I had to try 3-4 different iterations to find one that would work.

If it's a real squeeze, you could check out the LS4 stuff.
Although not sure if the LS4 crank pulley will work on a longitudinal crank.

I just completed this swap in an LS-swapped Fox body because I needed more clearance for my DP. However, the pump I used has a completely flat faced pulley. Lemme know if you want to see a pic of the pump installed.

2JZFC, Did you use an edelbrock pump?

Not an Edelbrock. Bought it on eBay and since Edelbrock doesn't make water pumps, probably the same pump rebadged.

I ended up buying a 3/4" spacer then milling it down to 1/2" so I could get maximum clearance. That put the belt on the outside edge of the pulley, but no concern there. Also cut down the Katech tensioner accordingly.
