Default Fuel pump issues what can i do

I have a 1998 ls1 firebird 6 speed i had driven the car to work when one day on my way to going home it cranked up and died of few seconds later. At first i believed it was a fuse or a relay but since i couldnt hear the fuel pump come on.

Now i swapped out the relay for a new one and replaced the fuses still nothing it would fire up after sitting for a bit but would die 2 seconds later. So as of right now im looking to replace it but since no one has it in my area i wanted to see what my options are??

How many miles on this car? Any mods? When's the last time it got plugs & filters? Is the SES light on or was flashing when driven?

You should do a fuel pressure check. Rent a fuel pressure gauge from an Autozone.

Get a pressure gauge on a rail and see how it does while you crank and it fires.

Does the security light come on while trying to start it?

The cheapest and easiest way to check the fuel pump, is to take off the intake tube. Spray a shot of carb cleaner, or starter fluid into the engine. Crank the car over. If it runs for a few seconds, its more than likely a bad fuel pump. This will save you alot of grief, as it did me. $0.02

I would try reset the computer too. Just unhook the battery for a minute and hook it back up and try it. Might not change anything but it has helped me in the past.

I can't even imagine what a shop would charge to do a fuel pump install. Dropping the tank and replacing a pump can't possibly be cheap. If you're a do-it-yourself'er, then it's time to buy a replacement pump: http://www.racetronix.biz/customkiti...c=RFPK-002&eq= and then, yes, the trap door method: https://ls1tech.com/forums/fueling-i...p-install.html. Or you can drop the pump and do it the hard way. I can promise you there will be far more cuss words involved in the latter option.

Trap door would be the easiest and cheapest route. If you want to do it without the trap door method expect to pay $450 + or you can do it yourself.

I went to do the fuel pump in my 98 and didn't want to hack the car either so I started taking everything apart from underneath. After fighting with the metal tank, trying every way possible to get it to slide out I look up and notice the previous owner had around cut the hole in the floor. Little pissed to find that out hours into the project but I ended up having to do it that way anyway because the tank did not want to come out at all. So do yourself a favor and just check first if it's already been cut since you say you don't think its the original pump.

I didn't want to cut up my SLP car either. I unbolted the track bar and brace on the passenger side, took the shock off, and the tank cleared everything that way. Yeah, it was kind of a P.I.T.A. but it was worth it. imho

I did my 00 that way and it wasn't to bad but my 98 with the metal tank was a b.... The filler neck didn't want to come free since its all part of the tank.

We did it with the axle in and it was a PITA. If I ever do this again, it will be the trap door method.

Lonnie's Performance (sponsor) carries the OEM pump at a very reasonable price.
