Default Eliminate PCV plastic?

What's the purpose of the hard plastic? Can I get rid of it and run a hose all the way to the tee?

Yes you can. Plastic is cheaper, lighter and will outlast rubber hose. This is why it's used instead of hose.

You setup looks like it's been messed with.

Probably just weight, but if it's not brittle I'd reuse it since it won't breakdown like cheap hose will. Yes feel free to replace it with hose if you want, just try to minimize any bends in the hose, like with the hose coming off the driver side. A 90* fitting off the driver side valve cover would allow the hose to be straighter, shorter, and sit closer the intake manifold.

Anyone know offhand what size the hose is? I'll get some from the parts store tomorrow + a 90 degree connector. The reason I want to change it is because the hose that goes to the head is different from the other piece, and it's really gooey, like, almost dissolving from the oil... And the plastic vibrates against the firewall sometimes. Might as well change it while everything's out of the way.

It should be 3/8" ID(inside diameter) hose.

Since you have the intake off, I would highly suggest the ls6 valley cover with integrated pcv. Get rid of ALL your PCV hoses and clean up your engine bay considerably.
