Default Thermostat removal from stock housing

I'm a new owner of a 2000 Firebird Formula. I'm going to change the thermostat. Is it possible to buy a stand alone thermostat and install it in the stock housing? OR do I have to get one that includes the housing? I'm seeing conflicting info on this because I've noticed some threads about taking it out of the housing, and others taking it out to shim the thermostat to lower the opening temp.

Theres no such thing as a one piece tstat......they are all two piece.

The tstat will come out.....push the two little metal wings down and twist. It will pop out......Watch your eyes and can shoot off like a bullet if you don't have a good hold on it.

I bought a couple replacement tstats over the years....same housing since 2002.....

If this is your type....that tstat is removable and replaceable......

......AND....get a 180*F....you will run cooler than a 160*F or factory stock 195*F.

So can I get any brand thermostat to put in the factory housing? I'm pretty sure my 2000 Formula is all stock.

Just an FYI, the factory original t-stat is actually an 86°C unit (187°F), so the swap to a 180 is a difference of only 7°F.
