Depending in your budget a good start would be going with longtubes and a tune

A dyno tune will net you the most power, just find a reputable tuner in your area and take it to them.

What is the year/make/model of your car? And is it auto or manual?

Yeah I would definitely get it tuned, it will help that auto shift quicker. The tune and longtubes to help it breath would make it a stronger car.

if you're on a budget a mail order tune or even a hand held tuner would cost less. you will see results from either one.

Why is everyone telling him to get a tune now? That's a waste of money, especially when he's going to need a tune later on for all the bolt ons he wants. OP hold off on the tune until you get actual mods, a tune now wont do much.

What gears do you currently have? If you dont know go look at the door sticker and see if it says GU2 or GU5. GU2 is 2.73 and GU5 is 3.23. If its 3.23 I wouldnt even worry about gears.

Next is your budget, what can you spend right now?
A stall converter is the hands best down mod for an auto and will provide the biggest gain. The size depends on what you do with the car and how much do you care about how it drives? A 3200 stall will be pretty good in a DD and they can be had for around 400 new if you want a budget converter. Otherwise a 3600 will be a tad more loose feeling but will provide more performance.

Speed engineering sells a nice set of 1-7/8 headers (dont get 1-3/4) for about 300 bucks and you can add a y pip to that to mate up to your existing catback. that whole package will be about 380.

Finally you can either pick up a used ls6 intake if you can find a deal or go get a new dorman aftermarket replacement and just do some minor porting on it to outperform the stock ls6 intake. That intake is right at 280 new.

If I was doing this I would first add a set of headers and y-pipe, then add the intake and lastly the stall. Now normally a stall would be first but your car is mostly stock and the other mods wont necessitate a tune whereas a stall will so if you do the others first you can still drive the car around like normal.

This was going to be my suggestion as well. If I had to start over with a bone stock car this would be the first thing I'd do.

You can Google the basics, but this thread has a few in-depth points that may help. http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=349786

Listen to redbird555, he is smart. A tune on a bone stock car is a absolute waste. I also would and did go Lt's ory, gear's tune converter tune in that order. I was a gu2 (2.73's) and went to 3.73's

I haven't been able to find any hand held tuners that work on '98s.
