Default Temp gauge works at startup up, but then goes to zero

Like title says.... temp gauge works fine at startup, but then goes to zero pretty quickly. Turn the car off for a few seconds, turn the key on, and the gauge works. Crank the car, and the gauge goes to zero in a few seconds.

thoughts?

Possibly the coolant temp sensor going bad. The cooling fans might also kick on high if the sensor is bad when your gauge reads 0

Temp sender is cheap and easy to replace. Might as well just put a new one on as yours is likely bad.
