Unhappy Magnaflow CatBack Driving Me Nutts! Midpipe Question

Good Afternoon,

My Magnaflow Cat Back 15684 is droning and is too loud.

I proposed putting a resonator on the 3" midpipe and the local exhaust shop said it would hit the driveshaft.

Has anyone placed a muffler or resonator on a 3" midpipe? Any clearance issues?

Are there any direct fit replacements for the magnaflow muffler?

Many thanks!

I have a MagnaFlow 14419 Bullet muffler in my 3" ORY pipe, and it clears just fine

This is the area that I am asking about. Has anyone placed a resonator there?

You may be the first person ever to say the magnaflow is too loud

As your diagram shows, this is exactly where mine is at

I believe that is called a Mid Pipe or a I pipe. The Y pipe is connected to the exhaust manifolds.

I'm glad to hear there is clearance there! I gotta change the tone of this exhaust. The drone is horrible after I put in the "small cam and LS6 intake."

Did that bullet muffler quiet it down inside the car? Was it noticeable?

Yes it's in the I pipe section. I went from a LM1 resonator to the 14419, so it's quieter overall. Much deeper tone, but without the rasp, and still is very loud at WOT

Question Bump - Anyone Else

Has anyone else put a bullet resonator / muffler on a 3" Midpipe?

A local shop has said there is no clearance for a 4" resonator to fit next to the drive shaft.

I'd suggest a different exhaust shop then. Unless your catback is installed incorrectly or somehow not sitting where it should under the car there should be plenty of room for some sort of bullet muffler or resonator in that location. I have a bullet muffler in roughly the same spot on my car right now. Granted it's only there for a temporary fix to not having a full catback but it still fits just fine.

I would suggest a different shop too. I also have the magnaflow 4 inch bullet resonator in the I pipe of my borla catback, and it's on a lowered car. I haven't had the first clearance problem with the exhaust and drive shaft.

Get some 2.5" perforated pipe, make your own resonators in the tailpipes (3.5").

There most certainly IS room there. I have a Borla XR1 in my I pipe that I put there to eliminate drone and the exhaust shop had no problem getting it in, and it has a 5" outside diameter. Like others have said, probably best to go somewhere else to get it done.

I used a Powerstick muffler. took care of most of the drone. then I removed the tips and put turn downs. Now I like my exhaust. Similar setup to yours.

Another option, I have done is 3" bullets, with 4 inch bodies just behind the header collector. Another thing to check is the exhaust hangers in the rear. If the exhaust is laying on the rear axle it will resonate badly.
