Default Difference between a $90 TB and a $400 TB

Hi Everyone,

I been a lurker on this site for many years and have found some really good info on my Trans Am as well as for the build I'm doing on my Buick, for that I thank you all! I do have, what seems to be, a dumb question. I'm putting together an engine for my 70 Buick; 5.3 LQ7, Texas speed cam and ported stock heads and a FAST LSXR 102 intake.

I'm looking for a throttle body, I'm leaning FAST 102mm but I see a few 102MM intakes that are a full $300 cheaper, what gives? Is it just the casting and throttle return quality? They all have TPS and IAC as well as a vent so that is not a difference.

Can anyone point me to a thread I may have missed or tell me what gives?

Thanks!

Good question. I'm not hear to answer it, would like to know as well. I think that people have difficulty getting the cheap TB's to idle well, that's one problem I have heard of.

I ran an ebay TB and it worked fine, but has a few problems.

1. Not good for boost. The lip on the throttle body for the silicone coupler just isn't big enough to keep one on at 18+ PSI.
2. There is no hole drilled in the TB for idle, you'll have to do this yourself.
3. The PCV tube falls right out if you pull hard enough.

So unless you need that PCV tube or plan on making tons of boost, just drill a ~3/16" hole in the TB blade and run it.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, check out WARR Performance. Quite a few guys running their 92mm and 102mm TB's and they have not had any issues.

I haven't heard anything good about the fast throttle bodies. If you're looking at the high end ones I'd look at the nick Williams
