Wiring for starter

Wiring for starter Im at work and a friend of mine just put a new motor in his car last night.. & hes trying to hook up the starter, He said he has three wires, A hot a Ground & and a small black wire... I cant anwser his question without looking at it.. So do any of you know if all three of those wires connect to the starter?
