MAS=MAF?
P orting the Mass Air Flow sensor ends is generally considered a bad idea for an A4 car because the MAF tends to report a lower load condition than actually exists. This in turn will increase the chances of transmission failure due to (I believe) slippage.
I don't know that the tricking of the PCM has to do with the MAF.
People did modify the IAT sensor to get more timing.But that's not the MAF.

I still can't figure out the drawbacks to descreening an MN6 car. Everyone just says not to do it , but doens't offer an explanation. I know that on the A4 cars the MAF reading is used to adjust the trans line pressure but someone please post what happens on a Manual car. I descreened mine a few weeks ago and my car seems perfectly fine. My A/F meters on the A-pillar still give the same readings as before. They go from rich to lean as they did before without a tendency to stay in one particular area.

Granatelli MAFs are junk IMO (no offense to JR)...absolutely unnecessary with LS1edit/HP tuners. They have screwed up airflow curves programmed into them and are a pain to tune.
There is nothing wrong with descreening a MAF. Thats different than porting it. Mines descreened, as are the new LS6 MAFs.
