The stock SS catback flows well. The muffler in the catback is a little more restrictive than aftermarket catback mufflers. If you are looking for just power get a cutout. Otherwise most people just change the catback for a different sound.

The stock SS exhaust is pretty good. Don't change it, it is not worth the $. Like Kieth said, get a cut out.

I have a stock Z28 and bought a stock SS GM muffler for $40 bucks to change it out with. With an SS, you could get the factory GM SS muffler or if the car was ordered with the performance exhaust, you get a SLP custom muffler.

I do know that the GM stock Z28 muffler is 27 inches long and the GM stock SS muffler is 22 inches long. I dont know yet about the difference in the internal structure. I do know the SLP performance muffler is different internally from both the stock GM Z28 and SS mufflers.
