Default y-pipe install on auto. trans

SLP has a different brace for auto. transmissions for installation of a y-pipe, do i really need to get this? for my 2001 trans am auto.?

No, they sell a replacement for the X-brace that comes
on convertibles. I bought one thinking it would be better
than beating the stocker all up to clearance, because the
SLP Y-pipe needs more room. But the SLP crossbrace I
got, would not fit more than 3 of the 4 mount points
at once, and interfered with the I-pipe at the back.
Useless, and the construction looked to me to be weaker
(a "spider" weldment) than the stamped stock piece to
boot.

I ended up doing a bit of minor dimpling on the Y and some
serious beating on the stock X-brace and had a couple years
of banging-free operation out of that (after mastering the art
of shim-hanging exhaust). If you want to see it there's an old
post of mine about it here. I believe the pic linkage is still good.

I thought the SLP piece was such junk I didn't even want to
resell it to some poor sap; I just threw it in the trash.
