Your backfire could be due to an exhaust leak. I have LT with a custom catted y-pipe and it only popped on deceleration and down shifting. The backfire slightly increase after I gutted my cats. If you have auto-tap I'd also would check for misfires to each cylinders for a possible bad plug wire or spark plug.

Are you sure it's just not regular exhaust sound? i get popping and crackling when cold/start-up and also when i disengage the clutch under deceleration. I have a dynomouth exhuast (bullet muffler). If you're just running the cutout open, your sounds are normal. you just don't hear them with a real muffler on there.

Exhaust leak or bad O2 sensor. Could be something loose too - like a lid, or MAF/TB clamp causing a bad read in the ecm making the car run rich. It's rich, which is causing the backfire IMHO.
