Default Easy way to tell if cats are history?

How do you know if your cat convertors are destroyed?

I can't pass NY emmsions. Last year I passed and this year I have no additional performance mods....

Try Changing your O2 sensors, if you have them. A bad O2 will make it smell kie rotten eggs.

You will smell something bad, like what thenewb said. They will just smell really really bad. Or if you can hear them rattling.

Smells like a rotten egg, the '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee I leased did that around 60k, the emissions warrenty covered that, it had new cats installed.

99% of bad cats rattle. They go bad either from physical damage, or overheating. Either way, the "honeycomb" substrate breaks apart, and they rattle. The 1% of cats that don't rattle are destroyed by contamination, usually by silicone or the use of leaded gas. Tap the cases with a hammer, or your fist if they're cold. If they're bad they'll rattle. Bad cats are supposed to set a fault code, but I've seen many cars with bad cats and no faults.

The cat will rattle until the whole thing breaks apart and gets blown out. Just because your cat doesn't rattle doesn't mean that it is still good. It could have completely blown out already, but you just didn't notice it. Two have blown out on me.
