Default Are there upgraded alternators for LS1s?

I may be going to add some additional electrical items and was wondering how much our alternators put out, if there are higher output units available and where to get them? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

I've heard of people having major problems with aftermarket alternators; cars catching on fire and such.

Exactly, I helped a local member the other week with a mysterious electrical problem, car had an aftermarket alternator. We hooked up the new battery, bam sparks and smoke everywhere, melted the negative post on the battery. Turned out that the alternator must of shorted its self out internally.

That being said, i'd try out the stock truck or suv alternator, rated somewhere around 140-150 amps.

Okay, you guys owe me. I found some, they are 200 amp, a little high, come in natural, black powdercoat, and chrome, and the vendor I found is not one of our sponsors. I have placed a post in the Sponsor forum to see if any of them carry them. You can keep an eye on it. If you need one right away, PM me and I will give you the poop.

Thanks,
Tom

I've run a 220 amp in my Vette for the past 4 years no problems. Had the same alternator in my 97 gmc for 3 years before that also.

They exist, the problem is from personal/professional experience is that they are overpriced and unreliable. When I had my yukon I purchased an aftermarket alternator(210 amp) based on the cs140 design. Luckly it had a 1yr warrenty as I went through THREE of them, two had 'internal failures' that they tried to blame on me, I gave up on high amps and put in a napa cs 140 alt and its been in there for over 3 years with not one single problem

Would a 140 amp alternator from a 6.0L truck bolt right into an F-body? A new Duralast 140 amp alternator from Autozone is like only $10 more than the 102 amp F-body unit.

Well there is kind of an alternator upgrade.

There is a General Motors Fleet Action for 2001/2002 Camaro Police Package Alternator Upgrade. It installs a 130 amp alternator.

Alternator – #10464443,
Pulley – #10496580
2 ea spacer – #15548699 (use two behind pulley, 10 to a package)
Belt – Gates Part Number #K060790, or Goodyear 060790
Output Terminal Eyelet Sized for M - 6 output terminal.

The rear-mounting bracket, which was used on the original equipment is not used on the replacement as there is no provision on the alternator casting for proper installation. Remove the M - 8 eyelet from the output wire and solder the M - 6 eyelet and insulate with heat shrink tubing.

I can’t tell you the price of all those parts from Chevrolet because they did it for free on my B4C while it was in service. The department I bought the car from was nice enough to include the paper so that I could replace the belt with one of the proper size.

As another help you might want to consider upgraded battery cables as well. I can highly recommend Gary’s upgrade battery cables. I have been in the electrical utility business for over 35 years, and while I could build these myself I could not do this good a job.

If you do the alternator upgrade let Gary know about it. He can provide the alternator output wire with either cable end, but he needs to know if you have upgraded the alternator.
