Post *WARNING* Cat-back melting the gas tank...Found when putting on the true duals.

I took my Z28 to Midas, To install my true duals, It hangs alot lower than I would have wanted it to, and I have it stop just about even with the axle.

I had the Corsa cat-back with headers and random tech race cats.
I was happy with the sound.

but.... SIIHP (Still Investing In Horse Power) kicked in, .
I noticed before, when I had my Corsa, that the over the axle pipe was pushing up against the heat shield so I pulled the pipe off and found that the pipe was starting to melt the gas tank. thru the heat shield
so I removed the heat shield and put a muffler wrap shield, in its place,,,

today when I looked at the tank I about messed my pants,
The heat wrap melted right into the tank,
so any of you with an after market cat back, check it out.

Even though the pipes hang a bit low,, I's a happy boy, it sounds awesome. and even without turn downs, at 80, there is not much drone, sounds almost as quiet as the Corsa, only deeper.
and sounds damn fine when I hammer the peddle.

At Idle, it sounds so damn fine, as soon as I figure out how to make a sound clip I'll post it.

The change in the ashtray rattles alot more, But I love the sound,
The mufflers are Flo-Pro Twisters.

Might wanna flip up your fuel line brackets to get your fuel lines a little farther away from the piping. Hasn't ever been a problem on anyone's car, but it's a good piece of mind, and it will allow you to push the TD's up a little closer to the floor pan too!

The X-looks nice!! is that a DR. Gas??? nice setup!

Good thing to watch for. Gotta be careful with some of these catbacks and the clearance needed at the over-the-axle point......

On the other hand, those of us with '98s finally have an advantage to the metal gas tank!

I don't see why there is a warning. You have a plastic gas tank. You removed the heat shield. I know better than to remove the heat shield, and I have a metal tank. Just don't remove the heat shield!

P.S. The Flowmaster cat-back I had got way hotter than any exhaust I had ever had. The first time I drove it the whole thing change colors because it got so hot.

I know we take lots of crap off our cars, but some things are there for a reason. Good thing to let others watch out for though.

The duals look great!!! What mufflers are those? Kinda look like bullets, but im sure they aren't considering you said it isn't loud.

Was the Corsa cat back exhaust not installed correctly that caused the over-the-axle pipe to rub on the tank? I have seen 4 inch cat backs that don't rub on the heat shields when installed properly.

Ok, but if you read his whole post, it was melting the tank thru the heat shield at first.......

Those duals look nice. They don't look like they hang to low. My car is lowered with TD and they are pretty low.

Good to know about, but I think I'm alright. My over the axle isnt even touching the heat shield. Nor does it vibrate against it during operation.

I removed the heat shield to see if there was any problem do to the pipe touching it, I then istalled a flexible heat wrap in its place,

I think the problem happened after a sponsor of this site installed my headers.

It may have altered the angle:dunno:

Well, you now have to worry about the pipes melting the fuel filter. Jesus that's close.
