Question How high to lift car to change headers and clutch?

I'm considering changing my clutch and installing LT headers myself. How high do I need to get the car up in the air? I have 2 jacks and 4 jack stands. Will this be enough?

Also, I assume it would make it easier to change the headers while the tranny is out. Any thoughts or suggestions.

Can I change the clutch without pulling the tranny out from underneath the car. I think the car would need less height if I just slide it back as far as I can.

I lift it onto 4 jack stands (Fairly big ones) about 1.25 feet in the air.

That will be plenty of stuff long as your jack stands go up high enough.

And you will have to drop the tranny out to get the clutch, its just the way of things, heres a hint though, disconnect the back end of the drive line and leave the tranny part in it so you don't dump fluid all over.

I knew I had top pull it out, but I thought with the bell housing height I could get away with just sliding back on the jack towards the rear of the car. What I'm trying to get at is with the tranny on the jack I don't think I can get the car high enough to pull the tranny out from underneath the car.

I didn't pull the tranny out from under the car. I just slid it back and swapped the clutch. There was plenty room. I set my car on cinder blocks for both.

i would not feel real safe doing this, but hey to each their own. Jack stands that are solid steel and don't crack are really cheap considering your life is on the line....

You guys know how to make a newbie at this work feel really comfortable!

I've worked on cars a lot in the past, but not a clutch and headers, I'm a little afraid to do this kind of work to my baby on my own.

yeah I think that would be a good setup, I guess I am just really afraid of that heavy *** car falling on my big ***...lol I use my jackstands and keep my two floorjacks under the car just incase something fails. I know in the back of my mind I am safe it is just being under that big *** car looking up at all that metal..

Go for it. It'snot that hard.

As for cinder blocks VS jack stands. The way I see it cinder blocks hold up major tons on a house and don't self destruct. I own jack stands and use them as well. The cinder blocks are just the right height to do this. Holes up and you are good to go.
