Default Borlamouth : Round or oval xr-1?

Im buying and xr-1 for my loudmouth and didnt know which muffler to get. Also, there appears to be different lengths of them as well. What will fit the best?

I used the 40085 (round-5" I think). I was unable to get good clearance b/c I had to do a hack job at home and haul it to be welded. It CAN tuck up there by the driveshaft if you can get it on a rack and position & tack weld it before pulling it out to finish the weld.
I thought about using the oval XR1 but was unsure of the fit. Would have liked to have one to test fit.
BTW, mines been on for about 70K miles now.

Both mufflers fit, but they are going to requier some beating of the floor board. The oval one is going to require a bit more also.

Any difference in flow or sound between the two?

That is not exactly true. A couple years ago a guy from Jupiter (FL-yes it's a real place) had posted pics of his install, which led me to install mine. His was a round XR1, as is mine. I have not a clue how the oval XR1 would install, though I cosidered it.
This is the second BorlaMouth thread I have responded to today.
The first change I made was to put a Dynomax 17295 ultra flow on the driver side (in place of the stock muffler-but only the drivers' side would be through the muffler). Not loud, but still the advantage of a straight-through muffler.
In a fit of "must balance the exhaust" I put the Borla right behind the Y pipe. Sounds good, no complaints there. I guess the bottom line is I spent an a$$load of money trying to make a silk purse out of a hogs ear. Go figure...

I just installed the XR-1, 40085 on my Camaro SS, today. No problem welding up at the muffler shop. It really fixed the nasty rasp, on my LS6 cam only, SS. I like it!!

Did the shop have to shorten or lengthen your I-pipe to allow it to fit the Y-pipe and over axle portion of the LM. If I remember right the 40085 is 16", but my cars in storage so I can't measure the length of the resonator to tell if it will be a direct swap. Any opinions here would help as I'm looking to do this after I install my headers

The oval has more packing and seems like it would absorb more sound, the round fits cleaner. I had both and was test-fitting last week, I don't see where you could fit the oval in the Y without it being way too low or up in the floorpan. I've got the round and it's fine, just enough to kill the rasp but still on the loud side.

The 40085 fits easily in where the LM resonator was. The muffler guy trimmed a little off one end of the XR-1 tubing, slipped it over each cut end, and welded. It took all of ten minutes. I don't see how an oval would fit, the round is pretty tight in there, but, there was plenty of clearance. It should be no problem for any decent muffler guy to weld the 40085 in. On my set-up, it works, and sounds perfect! I'm also running Hooker LT's. The rasp was horrible on the street, but everybody loved it at the strip. I don't think I'll loose much at the strip, but it sures sounds better on the street! HTH

https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...ht=borla+mouth

I used an oval and have 0 clearance issues and did not have to bang in the floor boards.

FWIW, if you run a search in this forum for "Borla Mouth" titles only, it pulls up several threads.

Edit: from the link above, scroll down to the 9th post for pics
