MTI Lid , anyone have this problem ?
Just got my lid today .
Does nyone else have this problem?
I am just inspecting it and it seems that there are 2 pieces of plastic mended together where you hook up to the MAF.. It looks like a monkey mended these pieces together?
I guess it can be air tight , but does not look like it is. I see a few pin-holes in the mended section... Also on the underneath where your air filter gasket will sit I seem to have 2 globs of this mended plastic right where the filter gasket would need to sit.... I have not tried to install yet but it sure seems like I may have some problems ...
Anyone else have this impression upon opening your box and inspecting this MTI lid?

My car has a carbon fiber looking lid on it when I bought the car. Possibly an MTI lid? I don't know who else makes the carbon fiber one. Anyhow, at the MAF end where the two pieces come together it was cracked. I ended up buying an SLP lid for $99 and it looks like it's molded much better.

Anyways, I have an slp lid, and it doesn't look great on the backside, but is very smooth on the inside, with no cracks at all. The slp lid seems to be a softer material than some of the other lids at least from my observations.

I took my TSP carbon fiber lid off last year after it developed a crack where the two pieces are plastic welded together (this was the second TSP lid I had that did that). I bought a clear MTI lid and the quality looked much better upon inspection. It's been installed since last summer and I've had no problems with it.

Another question on the installation .
The MTI instruction sheet states to place the K & N rubber seal provided with the filter onto the MTI clear lid. I installed my K & N on my stock lid
and I do not remember getting any type of gasket or rubber seal with the KN filter. Can I get this direct from K & N , Do I need it ??

Mine looks like your pictures, only in black.
I did find interesting data however.
I have a 99 MAF and a 01 MAF. The 01 fits so tight I have to hold the lid in a vise. The 99 MAF slips in and leaves cracks.
So figure in GM tolerances in addition to MTI tolerances.
FWIW mine cracked and I used black RTV.

I have seen others post on here that they got a new gasket direct from K N.
Your lid may fit good enough that it does not need one though, I have had two diff lids, one fit tight without it, the other did not.

Must give props to K & N . Called them today to see if I can order a new gasket/ seal for my MTI lid and they sent one for FREE , no questions asked. Also must give props to MTI. I called them and told them how bad the seal looked on the plastic lid and they told me to send it back and they will personally inspect a new lid and send it out to me ...Guy by the name of Jeff Barley was really helpfull in the sales dept.
I will update when I recv the new LID !!!!!!!
