Default oiling k&n filter

how do yall apply oil to the filter and how much do you use? im tryin not to over oil it as ive heard it can get on the maf sensors. also, what is the point of oiling it anyway.....is there any pro/con to running it w/o any oil on it?

I always put a little oil on the gasket to keep it lubricated, and it's always a good idea to prime it before putting it on. It means a couple seconds less of running without pressure. I use the 1007 stock size, and I'd say it holds a little less than 1/2 a quart.

the oil is there to block fine debris/dirt from getting in the motor. the filter is free flowing and cant block the fine stuff, so the oil catches it.

Just give every rib a light coat of the oil and let it sit for a few hours before putting it back in the air box. Also avoid any high speed runs for a day after you put the filter back in jsut to be safe.

run a stock paper filter- i guarantee you see no more than 2hp gain from k&n, plus any amount of oil in it can/will affect the maf.

also- k&n = 30$ or so
stock paper= 12$.

You just have to put oil on the outside of the filter border not on the filter itself?

no, he thought you meant oil filter, not air filter

you oil the airfilter element itself.

What is the difference between a regular oil filter and a K&N oil filter?? I just can't see the significance in adding performance to your engine...

The point is not to add performance, but to gain better filtration for a longer amount of time. This is beneficial when you're running a longer life synthetic oil. For example, I'm running German Castrol Syntec 5w40. It has a really long life. I want a filter that'll last that long and not lose it's filtering ability.

I believe that we are talking about oiling the air filter, not a oil filter. Just lightly oil each rib, and def. let it sit before putting it on again.

I run a paper fram filter, you really dont gain much from a K&N. Also, I dont have to worry about oiling it, but just be careful not to over oil.

My K&N came oiled already. Did you clean your filter and now need to re-oil?

I always oil mine when it still damp after cleaning. THis way I can use less oil and let the natural process of evaporation distribute the oil on the filter.

When the filter is still damp to the touch, lightly oil it and let is sit overnight. The evaporation will wick the oil arount the filter.

Works every time.

Thats what i do, plus it is saves oil (that stuff gets expensive) Also, i use a reusable filter because i have CAI, and it sucks alot of crap up, so i clean mine often. It is alot cheaper if you have a cai to use a reusable one as opposed to buying a paper one every few months

Does anyone ever read the supplied instructions with the filter?

Oil when new as instructed, put it in, forget it for 50,000 miles. Clean and re oil and forget for another 50,000 miles. That is exactly what KN says to do with it. The whole dirty MAF thing comes from people re oiling the thing every 3,000 miles.

For some of us 50,000 miles is:

10 years of driving

Way too long as we have a CAI kit (FTRA) and it gets dirty fast

We are MEN and don't read the damn instructions unless something is horribly wrong.

Oil it right and you can do it once a week if ya want.

Biggest pain in the *** ever, well, I had cones for the SLP intake (LT1) and it was a disaster. Finally got it right, but my dad thought I had murdered someone in our garage with my bare hands when he got home...

I've always been a direction reader. I cannot even unwrap something until I have read and understand the directions. Dunno why.
