Default starter chatter ??

what causes it and how to get rid of it.
it happens 90% of the time, every once in a while it doesnt happen at all, the rest of the time there are different time lengths it chatters before engauging.

battery is brand new, once it stops chattering it spins over fast as crap

starter was replaced, still did it, took the new one to get checked, passed 4 times in a row.

battery is in the back. 1ga + wire goes direct from battery to starter +
ground is 4ga direct from battery to engine block ground directly in front of starter

i have sanded all fasteners, block surfaces and wire end surfaces.

also from the starter is another 4ga + wire going to the accesory post (fuse block) and a ground 4ga from the other side of the block to the frame

help!

Dave,
Are you sure the new battery is fully charged?

yes its got plenty of ***.. spins the engine over like mad once the relay engauges fully.

last night i worked on it for a while.. think its a weak relay or the signal to trip the relay is weak.. i can jump the relay and it will turn the motor right over every time.. but with the relay it clicks for a bit first.

Have you looked at the teeth on the flywheel? Anything bent?
