Default Painting headers???

Probably buying some Hooker Longtube headers.....
going to buy the uncoated to stay within my mod budget(along with my cam and other goodies )
so I want to know If I can just paint the headers to protect them a little bit more...
any high temp paints really hold up to header heat abuse???

I used the "cast iron gray" high temp paint from
POR-15 on my manifolds and it seems to have
held up pretty well. It likes an existing base coat
of rust to bond with. So you might want to strip
the original black and leave them outside to get
a little oxide film going.

Rust is always bad
But I do know how to scuff things up to get the paint to stick...I just didnt know if anybody made a paint that was really going to hold up

i'd scuff up the paint that's there, or strip it, then hit the headers with brake cleaner to get off any residue.

http://www.jet-hot.com/

these coatings are awesome!!!

I highly reccomend them. It will cost a bit extra, but it's well worth it.Your headers will be close to bullet proof.

The reason he said to let some rust form is cause Por-15 tends to stick better to rust then it being clean. Its made for restoring cars and other things that rust. Seems like the best thing to me for the kind of price ur looking for.

I used some VHT 1500 degree paint. I did sand blast them first. It lasted the entire time they were on the car. Pretty good stuff.

You would really have to use it to understand. It neutralizes the rust so that it will never spread. It dries into one of the hardest surfaces you can imagine. Its really amazing stuff, works wonders when restoring cars. Expensive though.

POR-15 does indeed nutralize the rust so it dosnt spread. You dont need alot of rust, just light surface rust. The coating uses the uneven oxidized surface as a tooth to adhere to. Like he said, strip the headers and leave them outside for a little while just until the color starts to change and look rusty. You dont need big chunks and flakes of rust peeling off the headers.

Also, I sprayed VHT 1500 clear over my already coated jet-hot headers and it seems to be helping quite a bit.
