Default Flames?

Hey guys I was watching a race between a c5 and rx-7 and everytime the rx-7 would shift...flames came out of the exhaust pipe. It was pretty sweet. How did he do that. Has anyone done it to their fbody.

some of the imports run really high levels of fuel cause of the big turbos. when the boost is realeased, the extra fuel in system ingites in the exhaust and sends fire out the back.

I have seen that on a Camaro here in town. I was behind him going around 45 mph. I think some people put a spark plug at the end of the exhaust to ignite the unburned gasoline fumes. Then agian I might be wrong.

With enough exhaust enrichment and velocity
you could put out a burnable mix.

I saw a little Toyota funny car type vehicle at the
track the other week and he would shoot flames
when he got high enough in RPM that he started
to misfire. He only had about 2' exhaust pipes off
the motor out the side.

I got flames out of my old Fiat 2000 Spider when
the leaded fuel I decided to run through it killed
the O2 sensor. Carb intake from an earlier year
and a Pinto 2BBL fixed that.

It's the unburned gas leaving the combustion chamber. Lots of overlap in the cam, engine load drops (clutch disengage), the engine pulls more fuel for a moment than it can burn, out the exhaust it goes. You will see this alot durring road racing.

you also have to remember what youre dealing with. a Rotary high compression turbo-ed engine. i've heard (note: heard) that you can do it on the old RX7's just by taking off the cat and it will shoot flame. RX7's are bad ***. thats not just an effect thing my friend.

That is what my 2001 SS is known for! I used to shoot out flames whne I would road race or canyon carve my A4, see the avatar? It was due to the Hooker LTs & ORY that ran a tad rich. I have since tuned that out, no more flame from the SS ... but it is still known as the Flame Throwing SS.

I'll see if I can post the video of that little blurb.

My car used to do it when I had LT's/ORY/LM for an exhaust. If I backed off the gas at high rpms it would do it every once in awhile.
