i smell antifreeze, but nothing is leaking?? (help)
hello all i recently bought a 99 z28 it has 76,000 for miles, after i bought it after driving around for a bit i can smell a small wiff of anti freeze at a stop sign with the windows down once in awhile, but when you open the hood after im done driving and pop the hood you get a good wiff of it, since i got the car which was almost 2 months ago i did the tb bypass and it dosent seem to smell as much, but the smell is still there, i put on a new radiator cap, and the other day i took out the battery and then i took out the over flow tank for the hell of it, and i found that where the battery tray is molded to the coolant tank, there was about a 2 inch long sepration and coolant just pored out of the crack when i tipped it, so i bought a new coolant tank, the hose from the tank to the radiator, the grommet that the hose goes into on the coolant tank, and another new radiator cap, it seems that 95% of the smell is gone but i thought i smell it when i got out of the car today, and i popped the hood and i cant smell it?? do any of you guys have any ideas of what this could be? i changed the oil there is no antifreeze in the oil, there is no white smoke from the tail pipes, i just changed the plugs ans wires and none of the plugs were wet, and i replaced the whole coolant overflow system, the whole under side of the car is completely dry of antifreeze, there is no leaks from what i can see, thats why im so heated? is it possible the water pump is going? how can you tell if its the water pump? what is the weap hole in the waterpump? what is its purpose? please help me out... thanks in advance.. bob

Go rent a pressure tester from a local parts store. It screws on the radiator where the cap goes and has a pump/gauge. You pump until the gauge reads 15-17 lb's of pressure and sit back and look. If there is a leak, you will find it. The pressure should hold steady at 15-17, but if it starts to fall slowly, then you have a leak and should start looking. This is how I found a leak between my block and head. It's much easier than searching forever.

can you see all of the freeze plugs, my buddy was istalling a stereo on a brand new gto that had 800 miles on it and 2 freeze plugs were leaking, other than that you might try to check all of your hose clamps

If you only smell it inside now...then there is a possibility that your heater core is going bad or is leaking... check the front passenger side carpet up underneath the dash area...smell real close....and feel the carpet after a descent length drive...
if its wet...or you can smell it stronger there than anywhere else...then you have an issue with the heater core

Check the TB bypass...it is pretty common for it to leak at the connection just right of the TB where it enters the heads.
Mine leaked a few drops and you could smell it as it evaporated. I installed another band clamp on it and it doesn't leak anymore.

Ditto here; replaced the clamp and it's been fine.

Could be trapped air
When you opened up the coolant passages, air may have gotten into the system. Happened to me when I changed my anti frezze. Keep checking the fluid level in the radiator and add as needed. Smell should eventually go away.

The fan settings on these cars make the coolant
temp swing very high (220F or so) and wide. This
makes the coolant purge out into the puke tank
(pushing out a whiff of hot vapor) on the up-swing
and then draw back in when the car gets rolling
and the radiator starts to cool effectively. When
I set my fans back to stock I noticed a coolant
smell that is not there normally (with my lower fan
temp settings).
