in theory wouldn't flipping it expose that same dirty and grime to the motor if the airflow ever dislodged it?
i can't flip my FIPK filter, but i wash it every 6k or so, 3k during bad allergy seasons and when its real dry or i drive through lots of construction(dust and dirt in the air).

The opening for my ramair is about 2'' and that is the part that gets dirty. I don't "flip it over" per say I rotate it 180 deg so that where the opening for the ramair is on a clean part of the air filter.

[QUOTE=conan] That's what I do with mine. You do get a nice slit of dirt with FRA or CAI.

This is going to sound like I'm trying to be "smart", but......honestly, I change or rotate my fram when it gets dirty. I leave it until it turns fairly dark, then rotate it 180 degrees, then go again till it gets dirty, then toss it.
Edit: From what I've been hearing about the K&N's, I would throw it away when it got dirty and put a paper filter in.

so you dont wash it.
See some people wash it. I have the k&n and you arent supposed to THROW IT AWAY. Wash it. I never knew exactly HOW to wash a filter so I just left it alone.
I had the cleaning kit (oil) but unfortunately my wife knocked over the bottle and all the red oil spilled out lol

K+N filters DO get washed. If youre throwing away K+N reusable air filters, youre practically throwing away $50 bills. Simply wash with the garden hose, and maybe some dish soap. Rinse well. Let it air dry or use a hair dryer. Use the K+N recharge kit to re-oil the filter gause. Dont over oil it or the oil will contaminate the MAF wires.
