Exclamation WS6 hood baffles?

Im thinkin bout removing the hood baffles to let more air in, but im kinda not sure bout it. Is it actually 100% safe? Im not rich so i cant affort to do a free mod that might end up causing problems. i live in Tulsa, Ok & we get a fair amount of rain here, sometimes unexpected. I drive my car to & from work everyday & in all weather conditions. Without the baffles in the hood, does water make it in all the way to the air filter? Im not a fan of soakin my air filter w/ water. If this mod is 100% safe then i will do it to get more air to the motor, but if there is a chance it will let water in, then im gonna leave it alone.

Please other WS6 owners let me know? (By the way mine is a 99' M6)

i am pretty sure you wont have any problems.People with the bg ram air kit say they have drivin in downpours without the rain blocking plate and have been fine.this kit totaly seals the hood to the air box.If you just take out the baffles you will still have a good 3/4" gap between your hood and airbox for water to drain. If you did suck in enough water to break the engine then that will be the least of your worries as that would be one deep *** puddle.Take the baffles out and forget about it.

I drilled the revits out its very easy, they're also held in by some glue
I also live in Oklahoma and have never had a problem, I have heard its best to have a K&N type of filter because the paper ones can let water through easier.

hey think about it you have a bunch holes there is it gunna do much difference to open them up, there big enough to get water through, its only two screws on each of them(easy to uninstall). plus take one off and look at it, then the normal side, it has a little ridge on it and looks like hell, normal way just looks better unless you want to grind the ridge down when you take off the grates, then it may look okay. by the way if im off topic sorry im drunk and on vacation

yeah I've driven through the floodes of Los Angeles, where it just rains and rains, also recently drove through the winter storm that hit Denver, where they got 2 ft of snow, the main highways were closed down then through more rainfalls so heavy I had to pull over cause I couldn't see through the heavy rain, traveling 75-80 mph. I had zero problems, at one point I stopped and checked and there was a very light wet touch to the paper filter, almost not wet at all, almost like a quick fine mist hit it real fast. The filter is still OK, but I don't have the airbox sealed off to the opening, so water probably drops out, plus there is still a small ridge that will stop water.

Use a drill bit about the size of the hole inside the rivet (the eye) not the outer rim of the rivet but the little hole in the middle, then they all fall right out. THe top baffles are held in by rivets and glue, after the rivets are out just take an old broom handle and wedge it against the baffles and push up against them, this will loosen them, then just keep giving more pressure and they will pop off, and believe me they make a popping sound, but it won't damage the hood, just keep appling pressure to them as though you were bending a piece of metal back in fourth in order to break it in half, the flexing weakens the glue and they come out easy. Some people just pry hard against them and they pop off, they don't have problems either, so both ways will work.

havent had any problems with mine yet, BGRA sealed to the airbox with no baffles of any kind. just a straight shot to the filter. the water cant make the 90 degree turn through the air filter. id just do it and not worry about it.

Thankx for all the comments guys, im gonna take those baffles out on my lunch break today. i got to lookin at it close this weekend & i see how it would be harder to suck water straight up off the flat bottom. Thankx again for the information & personal experiences.

I'll tell you my experience. Note that I have the suncoast creations hood. I took the baffles out and drove through the rain and i checked and the filter was soaked. It was like someone poured water out of a bucket on it. Now I'm going to have to make block-off's for when it rains. I currently use a towel haha. Ghetto, I know, but it works. BTW it scared the crap out of me because I thought I was about to seriously screw something up.

If you had a short flat head screwdriver it makes getting the baffles out much easier. Just wedge it in and start prying.

I took mine off as well and just grinded the rivet heads down to the hood and then from inside beat them out using a hammer sideways and a ratchet, came out clean! just broke the rivet heads off and boom!!
